ABOUT US

Monsoon Tea’s unique focus lies on making exceptional wild and free-grown tea from the hills of northern Thailand, using traditional and sustainable cultivation methods. Our mission is to make these distinctively aromatic teas accessible to everyone while conserving the environment and its biodiversity.

All of our teas come from the original undomesticated Camellia Sinensis Assamica plant indigenous to the Thai highlands. It is an extremely rare tea used in less than one percent of tea cultivation worldwide.

Characterized by a deep and naturally malty flavour, its rich taste stems from growing in harmony with diverse native plants and herbs in its natural habitat. Unlike conventional plantation tea, Monsoon tea is grown in forests. This non-invasive cultivation method prevents deforestation and is one of the most sustainable ways of planting tea. This method is unique to northern Thailand and has been practiced for generations.

By maintaining the way Thai tea farmers have been planting and harvesting tea, Monsoon Tea is preserving age-old growing traditions. We let the tea thrive naturally with minimal human involvement. It is organically grown and free from herbicides and pesticides.

We select only the best wild and free-grown teas to be savoured in pure or flavoured form. Enjoy the deep and full taste of our pure teas, or revel in one of our exciting house blends which are enhanced with natural and locally inspired fruit, flower and spice fragrances. Welcome to Monsoon Tea and enjoy all the Thai forest has to offer!

FOUNDERS OF THE COMPANY

KENNETH RIMDAHL

In the field of tea since 1994, Kenneth opened his first tea shop in Spain under the wing of his mentor Per Sundmalm who founded the East West Company Spain tea firm and introduced Kenneth to the world of tea.

It was Per who first told Kenneth about the existence of wild tea. Parallel to the expansion of the East West Company Spain, of which Kenneth later became a co-owner, he began traveling the tea world to expand his knowledge and find the elusive wild tea. His journey took him to the best tea-producing areas in China, India and Japan, but never did he find a genuine wild tea.

His travels finally led him to Thailand where his friend and current business partner Vorakan Wongfu introduced him to “Miang”: fermented tea leaves from wild and free-grown tea plants enjoyed by Thai mountain dwellers for centuries. Impressed by the unique and remarkable flavour of the Miang and the sustainable way it is grown, he decided to embark on a new venture focused on the concept of sustainable tea.

Founded in 2013 this new enterprise is called Monsoon Tea and is at the heart of northern Thailand’s sustainable tea community.

THE MONSOON TEAHOUSE

Our comfortable teahouse is the perfect setting for you to enjoy our large selection of freshly brewed teas.

We brew and serve our teas in different ways: hot, iced, or blended in smoothies, healthy fermented kombucha, and fun cocktails. We encourage you to sample a variety of styles as tea flavours are enhanced differently through the various preparation methods.

Our restaurant is guided by a unique philosophy – all dishes are inspired by the flavour of our wild and free-grown tea and by the traditional cuisine of Thai tea farmers. We create our own original recipes cooked with fresh and fermented tea leaves alongside traditional northern Thai Lanna dishes which have been enjoyed by tea pickers for generations.
